  1. I am trying to set up my room finish library defaults in the Prefs_Def folder so that the file is accessible from the server and not the individual user files. I set the path in the VA2_Preference_Set_Paths.txt file but when I edid the finishes list it always defaults to the local copy of the file. In the default finish library file it uses the [%plug-ins%] syntax to reference the path so I replaced it with the full path to the file on the server. Is this the correct way to do this? Is there any special syntax required? The way our server is set up I have had had a hard time with setting paths in the past. In the spotlight get info pane there are 2 paths listed. one is/volumes/etc/etc and the other is afp://servername\.lan._afpovertcp._tcp.local/etc/etc I have tried to set the path both ways. Any suggestions?
  2. Unless you use guides to layout modules on your sheet layers then you still have to turn them off. I try to lay out things by the module grid in the design layers as much as possible and don't show the modules on the sheet layers but everyone in my office has always laid out the sheets on the sheet layers so they use the guides. They are used to drawing things anywhere they feel like on design layers and positioning the viewports on the sheet layers. I am trying to get them away from that practice and draw in place on design layers and just DLVP the whole layer.
  3. I have brought this up before. If people have to remember to turn off a specific class before printing, half the time they won't remember. I don't know how many times I have seen stuff printed and even submitted with layout grids and other stuff printed because someone forgot to turn off the class. Using saved views helps but again, you have to do something extra before printing.
  4. Yes, it changes your active class to ensure that the new object goes on the same class as the source. Nice feature but I have to get used to the switching classes. The same tool in ADT picks up the attributes of the source for the new object but doesn't switch your active layer/class. When doing a variety of different things and laying out geometry in a design I usually stay in a nplt class for sketching and I end up sketching in wall, door or window classes. I just have to get used to it.
  5. I have no complaints about stacking order really, The layers are one thing I really like about VW compared to AutoCAD and that is a huge deal coming from a life long AutoCAD ADT user like myself. I have not used the visibility tool much so I will need to check out all the options.I just figured that when layer settings are not set to "modify others" and I can't select objects on other layers unless my layer settings are set to modify others it just doesn't make sense to me that objects on other layers would prevent me from selecting something on the current layer. I figure the layer options should be all that is needed. If it something in the programming that makes the create similar object ignore the layer settings then is it possible from a programming perspective to have the tool follow the layer settings.Everything else seems to. This isn't a huge deal or anything, I am just trying to understand the program better and I am always trying to refine my work flow.
  6. I have not experienced this problem. I set up a work group folder on our server from one computer and let it set up the folder structure. I added any custom content, symbols, hatches etc to the work group folders. For files you want everyone to have access to I created an alias to the files and put the alias into the work group favorites folder instead of adding them as a favorite from vector works. Add the work group folder to all computers in VW options and everyone will have access to all the content and any links you place in the favorites folder will show up in the favorites drop down list. You do need to set the permissions for the work group folders so everyone can access them. I just did a test to make sure. I selected one of the work group favorites files in the resource browser of another computer and I was able to open that file on my computer without any problems. If you placed the actual files in the work group folder that may be the problem or it is just a permissions issue.
  7. Yea it would be nice to just be able to switch it off. I made it go away using part line styles and setting the door line to none but to get part line styles to work can be a pain.
  8. Is there an option for a roll up garage door? With the standard overhead door it shows a dashed line for the path of the door overhead. Is this assigned to any of the door components? I was able to turn it off by setting the door line attributes to none and using part line styles in the door settings but I was wondering if there was a way to remove it or if there was a roll up door option somewhere.
  9. Maybe I am not being clear. It is the stacking order that is messing things up because I use create similar object a lot but I have to turn layers off and on or reverse my stacking order to use it. It's just more hassle than it needs to be. It would make more sense, to me anyway, to not be able to select objects from other layers with all tools and functions unless select and modify others is turned on. It just seems like a bug to me.
  10. I think my problem was due to file permissions. For some reason we keep having issues with files getting locked and only accessible by one user. Everyone has group access but it keeps happening. Erich, I have had similar issues with things disappearing. I find that the viewport will show full size but nothing is there. if I go to the referenced file the preselection highlight will show but the page is blank until I switch to another layer and back then everything shows. It is a pain in the butt.
  11. The thing is, the door or window or wall is highlighted when I try to use the create similar object function. I was tweaking a model so I had roof and frame layers on using the frame as a guide to draw column enclosures and adjust window positions etc. I didn't think the stacking order would make a difference at all with modify others turned off. I think it would be useful to have the option to see other layers but only select or work with objects on the current layer.
  12. HMM, I am pretty sure I was selecting objects on the current layer and nothing was in a group. With this drawing I can not use the create similar tool on anything at all. Would stacking order of layers effect this even if modify others is not set?
  13. I ran into the exact same situation the other day but after messing with it for a few minutes it worked as expected. I am not sure what I did. I had a 3 component wall and I needed to cut the interior stud out in 3 places so I made a different wall type without the interior stud. One of them would only insert on center but the others worked fine. I think I may have used the remove wall breaks tool on part of it but I am not sure.
  14. Sometimes when I try to use the create similar object function it gives me an error telling me that there the selected object has no associated tool in the current workspace. I right click on a window then select create similar object and I get this error. Sometimes it works but not in this drawing. I can create a new window without any problems so I dont know what is up with this.
  15. I have had the exact same problem with no solution. In my case I narrowed it down to a specific computer that seemed to be causing the problem. I made sure the fonts on all computers were the same and all copies of vectorworks and OS x were the same. The callouts appear fine on the suspect computer but when the drawing is opened in another computer the callout text is wrapped. I wish there was more feedback on this but it seems to not be happening to everyone. I see we are using different operating systems. The file where this first appeared was a VW12.5 file. I have not noticed the same behavior in files created in VW2009. To try and narrow it down, Do you have always left justify text selected? I draw my callouts from arrow to text instead of text to arrow and have not experienced the problem but others here use the default text to arrow.
  16. One thing I do with files I want to make sure everyone uses is I put an alias to the files in the workgroup favorites folder. Everyone has quick access to your symbols or borders without having to browse for them.
  17. I am wondering the same thing. You can't center your center lines. Its not usually a big deal with longer lines but for details the dash styles are a real pain the way they are.
  18. Is there a way to modify the marker graphics or add a different one to the selection?
  19. Hmm, I just tried the custom modification command, set it to select object type window. It found all the windows and brought up a copy of the properties pallet but when I select settings nothing happens.
  20. When editing doors or windows, only items that appear on the object info pane can be edited for multiple selected doors and windows. If something in the settings needs to be modified it will only change one object at a time. This makes it very tedious to modify all the doors or windows when it is needed. We should be able to select all windows that need to be changed and be able to change any of the settings available for all selected windows or doors. It would be nice to have a style based settings similar to the walls where all windows of the same style are controlled by changing the attributes of the style.
  21. I am having a problem with a building model that references 4 other drawings. With one of the referenced drawings it seems to mix up the layers. My walls etc are in a layer named existing 2nd floor in a file named 2nd floor background. when I make a layer reference into my model and select the existing 2nd floor layer all I get is a dead viewport. Other layers in the drawing can be activated but this one keeps messing up. Sometimes I can get it to show. The other referenced files work as expected. I can get it the walls to show only if I turn on a layer that doesn't have any of the walls in it. If I select the viewport and edit referenced design layer it takes me to the right drawing and everything is there. When I save, the model drawing shows that the reference needs to be updated so I am positive that I don't have some files mixed up. This will all be working fine then my second floor disappears for no reason. Is there a way to check for corruption in a file like an audit command or something?
  22. Ahh thanks! I didn't notice that it created classes for the glazing styles. With window objects it is a little different but I guess I set the glazing component style and it makes a style# class? This will work great for what I need right now. I am trying to get the bosses to buy renderworks for me but this works for a basic model. Thanks.
  23. I wound up creating it in several sections and joining them together because of the way the glass is divided. This tool just can't do what I wanted. Now the next question is about the glazing. There are 3 glazing options but 2 show no glass and one makes the glazing and mullions all gray. The same thing with the windows. Do I have to have the renderworks package to make glass look something like glass? Right now my model is all monotone in openGL. Can I at least make the glass a different color for some contrast?
  24. Well, the window wall is 40 feet high divided into 10' and 5' high sections that match precast panels on either side. It fills a 3 story hole in the wall. The biggest piece of material will only be 10' but I should be able to make it one element. The existing panel joints and mullions do not join at the floor levels. I could do it in 2 pieces if I have to but I was just wondering why you are limited to 4 panes of glass with the window wall tool.
  25. Is there a way to add more divisions to the curtain wall tool? There are only 3 mullion levels and I need 5. I would rather create the whole window wall as one element rather than separate elements by floor.
