  • Vectorworks 2016 Operating System Compatibility Announcement

    PVA - Admin

In our mission to further advance our technology, we have made substantial improvements to the visual interaction and experience of designing with Vectorworks 2016. With this progression, we will be taking advantage of the power of modern hardware. Therefore, beginning with Vectorworks 2016, we will no longer be supporting:

    Windows XP (32-bit and 64-bit)

    Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)

    Windows 7 (32-bit)

    Windows 8 (32-bit)

    Windows 8.1 (32-bit)

Mac OS X 10.8 and earlier

    Windows XP:
Now over 14 years old, the Windows XP operating system (OS) has been supported longer than any other OS by Vectorworks and many other applications. However, in addition to Microsoft no longer releasing security updates for XP (making the OS a major security risk), XP also does not support many of the current graphics card drivers and other standards that Vectorworks 2016 requires. Additionally, Vectorworks 2016 is 64-bit only; since there was such limited support of Windows XP 64-bit even when it was new, our support for this legacy OS has finally ended.

Mac OS X 10.8 and earlier:
Support for these two OS versions was dropped for a very specific reason. Vectorworks software is checked for errors and maintained with Xcode software, which is provided directly from Apple. Xcode must be run on the same operating system as Vectorworks software. The most recent version of Xcode, which contains a number of development tools necessary for maintaining Vectorworks 2016, does not run on OS X 10.7 or 10.8, meaning that it would not be possible to test features, verify reports, or correct bugs related to Vectorworks on those operating systems. In recent years, Apple has accelerated the pace at which it ceases support for previous operating systems, with this year being the shortest cycle so far.

    No 32-bit support:
Vectorworks 2016 is 64-bit only, which means that to run it, you must have a 64-bit operating system, such as Windows 7 64-bit, Windows 8.1 64-bit, Mac OS X 10.9, or OS X 10.10. This will not affect most users, as the vast majority of modern computers now run 64-bit operating systems. Older operating systems, such as Vista 32-bit, as well as all 32-bit versions of current OSes like Windows 8.1, are no longer supported.

We hope this information provides you with the knowledge you need to plan for any upgrades well in advance.
