There are a number of issues to be aware of when upgrading your operating system without performing a clean install. For instance, upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, or from OS X 10.9 to OS X 10.11.
Before performing any operating system upgrade however, check here to make sure that your current version of Vectorworks is compatible with the new operating system.
NOTE: With any OS upgrade, Tech Support normally recommends a complete uninstall and reinstall of Vectorworks after the upgrade is complete. Steps for uninstalling cleanly can be found here.
Some of the OS-specific issues we have encountered specific to Vectorworks include:
Mac:
Corrupted user account:
Upgrading your operating system via Apple's migration tool can sometimes result in a corrupt user account. This can be confirmed if you can not launch Vectorworks after migrating to a new OS in your original user account, but are able to launch it in a newly created user account. Steps for creating a new account can be found here.
In some cases it is possible to repair the original account, steps for attempting this can be found here.
Red Xs:
Red Xs instead of tool icons in the user interface. Steps for correcting this can be found here.
Vectorworks Migration Manager - Missing Tools:
In some cases after using the Vectorworks Migration Manager, you will get an error message similar to: "The plug-in tool "Renderworks Camera" could not be selected. It is missing necessary resources or the file is damaged." This can be corrected by following the steps outlined here.
Windows:
Graphics Drivers:
Upgrading your operating system can often leave your graphics drivers either out of date, or reset to a default graphics driver which can cause slowness or instability in Vectorworks. See this article for steps on how to update it manually.
Nvidia Graphics Settings:
If you have an Nvidia graphics card, after upgrading from a previous Windows OS, you may need to reset your Nvidia Control Panel settings to restore normal performance in multiple applications, including Vectorworks. Steps for doing so can be found here.
