  • WebView Best Practices and Known Issues

    Jim Wilson

    1) Geometry limits:

Desktop: If you have above 2 million points in your model, it may respond slowly or become unstable.

Mobile: If you have above 1 million points in your model, it may respond slowly or become unstable.

These limits are due to how browser memory caching works. Development continues to increase the efficiency of our export to increase the number of polygons we can support.

    2) Each export to the web is given a flag, which gives a two week time limit to your export. You can check the amount of time left in the About menu.

    3) (Mac only) If viewing in Preview and the default browser is Chrome, it will fail to load because of browser security issues. You must use another browser to view the Preview app.

    4) You can only export in Perspective at the moment. If you are currently in Top Plan or Orthogonal, your view will be placed into Perspective so you can export properly. For the best results, we recommend changing your view to Perspective with the OpenGL render mode on before activating the Export Web View menu command.

    5) Since this is a webapp which uses a browser, stability might become an issue with browser updates. Please keep in this mind if anything seems to go wrong after a browser update. We will be tracking these updates and making the appropriate fixes if updates cause irreversible failures. Please contact us if you believe this has occurred.

    6) If you export in Cropped Perspective, the view will not be exact and will be determined by the bounds of the crop. However, you will still be placed into the model after the export.

    7) Webview stereo (VR view) has a low resolution since VW 2018. It is, in fact, useless.

It seems that on my iPhone I miss the Eye and 360 buttons when viewing a 3D .vgx file in Nomad. Is this a browser only option?

    Hi @Jan-Burger TROOST,

Yes, the .vgx file is displayed by different viewers when opened in Nomad versus a browser. Note that you can use the mobile browser on your device, to access the features that the browser viewer provides.

Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Hi @inikolovaThanks for your reply. Of course I should have used a browser instead of Nomad for the vr split screen… Could it be that Nomad will have the capability to do this from within the app in a ‘soonish’ update?

    hi @Jan-Burger TROOST,

I am not aware of any plans to make the two viewers identical at this time. I will enter it into our tracking system as something consider implementing in the future.

    Thanks for your feedback!

    Hello @Rick,

If you have an android device, please follow the instructions in this help article listed under Daydream with regards to turning on the WebVR flag in mobile Chrome. You'll have the best experience in cardboard VR with those settings. The plan is to basically retire the old VR code (which runs for Android/iPhone devices when WebVR is unavailable) which rotates the position weirdly on some devices, but we plan on making a fix which loads the new cardboard settings automatically if the WebVR API is available in the browser.

As for the blurriness in VR, this is caused by the old VR code, which probably won't get addressed unless we have plans on fixing that old code.

Most likely, you'll get the best experiences from VR by using one of the following:

Chrome on Android phones with WebVR turned on
    Vive with Firefox
    Oculus Rift with Firefox
    Daydream

There are other devices that we plan to support in the near future. Please stay tuned!

I hope this answers your question!

    Best Regards,

    Andrew

    Hello Andrew,

I'm working on a Mac. And I use an iPhone. So this means I can not use the VR function anymore.

The biggest plus was that everybody could see the VR model you produced. Anywhere, anyplace : Android/iPhone/Mac/PC/linux/tablet/phone/desktop/

So for the mac community it looks like Vectorworks has no VR functionality (anymore). So maybe you should not

    advertise with this feature anymore.

I can't believe that even Nomad can't show the VR model.

It answers my question, but the answer is quite incredible. All my VR models are useless now.

Minicad used to be a macintosh application. So much for going cross platform.

    Greetings from Holland

    Hello Rick,

VR works fine in a browser window on both your iPhone or compuer. I do this on a very regular basis. Maybe we can meet in Rotterdam so I can show & help you with the settings? Just DM me for contact details!

    De groeten!

Hello Jan Burger, Thanks for your response. The model looks fine when not in Stereo view mode. But if you want to watch the model in a real VR mode you need a phone so you can rotate it to landscape and choose "stereo view" (this option is only available on phones)

You put your phone in your Cardbox, Bobo (or whatever VRholder) and with stereo view you can walk around. Until VW2018... From that point in time the quality is really bad.

    Try it here :

    www.smets.nl/andal/index.html

    Bad quality strange perspective

    And here the old quality:

    www.smets.nl.hala/WebGlTemplate.html

If you have a workaround. Let me know!!

Groet uit Bussum en dan voor je reactie!
