  • "This file could not be opened..." Error Message

    PVA - Admin

Some users may have come across this error: "The file cannot be opened because it requires a product that is not activated for the current serial number."

This error can appear for a number of reasons.

    1) The main cause is when a user with a Design series module, such as Architect, inserts objects specific to that module such as Custom Stairs or Space into a Vectorworks document, then a user with only Fundamentals tries to open that document. Since Fundamentals does not have those plugins, it will show this error.

You will still be able to SEE the objects, but you will not be able to modify or perform any actions on plug in objects (other than removing them) that your installation of Vectorworks does not have.

    2) The second most common cause of this error appearing -and the reason it would appear each time you launch Vectorworks or opened a new document- is if you have previously had a version with one or more modules already installed, than your current serial number does not have access to.

This will specifically occur if you have used the evaluation license of Vectorworks (Which includes all Design series modules as well as Renderworks) and then attempted to enter your serial number with fewer modules (such as Fundamentals Only) without first uninstalling and reinstalling.

To correct this second scenario, first you should uninstall the current copy of Vectorworks, then reinstall with your proper serial number. Steps for properly uninstalling Vectorworks can be found HERE.

If you are still unable to resolve the issue, get in touch with tech@vectorworks.net directly, preferably with the file attached.
