  • macOS 14.4 Compatibility Issues with Vectorworks

    JuanP

    UPDATE 07/09/2024

Even though the upgrade to macOS 14.5 resolved the unexpected slowdowns, crashes, and printing size discrepancies, the issue with Vectorworks lagging when zooming or performing other functions on a second display remains. Our R&D team is in contact with Apple and is also investigating alternative solutions to address this issue. Our QA team is also testing macOS 14.6, but unfortunately, we have not observed any improvements. We will keep you updated on any progress regarding this issue.

    --------------------------------

We wanted to provide an important update regarding compatibility concerns between the latest macOS versions, 14.4, 14.4.1, and Vectorworks.

Vectorworks has identified significant issues from the recent macOS Sonoma 14.4 updates, resulting in unexpected slowdowns, crashes, and printing size discrepancies for customers. These crashes have been predominantly observed on systems with external displays and often occur after the computer is awakened from sleep. Apple is currently addressing these issues, and we are awaiting a resolution in an upcoming macOS update.

In the meantime, we strongly advise against upgrading to macOS 14.4 or macOS 14.4.1 to avoid potential disruptions to your workflow. If you have already upgraded and are experiencing these issues, we recommend disconnecting external displays or reverting to a previous macOS version if feasible.

We are monitoring the situation and will keep our community informed of any developments as they become available.

Chiming in quickly to mention a "fix" that we've had luck with in regard to the Vectorworks 2024 zooming issues, drawing lagging, heavy CPU/GPU draw, etc. I was an early adopter of MacOS Sonoma and like many others had mid-render crashes, crazy computer resource problems, items disappearing on the drawing, among many many others. While randomly trying to troubleshoot and not go insane, I minimized the drawing and realized that all of those issues went away on the desktop, but if I I pulled back open the drawing window, full screen, all these issues would come back. I tried different resolutions, placements, configurations, etc. and still no resolve. THEN while randomly trying to cram more windows on my Studio Display I noticed that if I scaled the drawing window in just a bit so that it didn't "touch" the edges of the screen on the left/right, that all of the above issues did resolve. That said, I have been on 2024 since with no issues and recently updated to 14.6 and things seem to be running smoothly. This is clearly not a long term fix, but it is not affecting my workflow, so I'm living with it for now!

    Computer Specs:

    Chip: Apple M1 Max

    Memory: 32 GB

    MacOS: 14.6 (23G80)

    Vectorworks Version:

    2024 Update 6 (Build 765860)

    Hope this is helpful!

I am just adding another thing that relates to the above post.

If you keep the Vectorworks window a bit smaller than your full display screen the MacOs process called "window server" drops down.

I have had several performance issues with Vectorworks when it´s window was scaled to use the full desktop. The "window server" process was constantly rising it´s cpu usage and Vectorworks became more and more unresponsive.

Since i am not working with the full desktop size this issue is gone.

    Maybe that helps others too.

Hmmh, I did not have such issues so far.

Thought because of being a desktop and single monitor user.

But I usually always "maxed out" my CAD/BIM/3D App's Windows by

    green light while holding ALT.

So basically maxed out but between Menu Bar and Dock .....

    maybe it´s setup related

i always use the macbook display, one LG curved display with 3440x1440px and a Thunderbolt display with 2560 x 1440px

the LG is connected with HDMI direct and the Thunderbolt display with an Apple USB-C / Thunderbolt connector...

I remembered there was a similar issue several years ago,, that changed the behauviour of vwx when it´s window has been scaled down a bit. I think it was something with multiple viewpanes...

M3 Max 64 gigs ram, 2TB storage running 3 screens plus laptop screen....system flies...shortly after upgrade the aforementioned problem....all other apps running properly.

Point of clarity....this is not happening to my M2 MacBook Air road machine running an additional display which is all the graphics card can handle.

OS 14.6....all running perfectly. Seems the M3 chip is the issue as well as the OS....

I've just started noticing problems since upgrading to 14.6.1 . On a MacBook Pro M1 Max 32 GB with LG 32" external monitor, VW 2024 update 6.  I hadn't seen this thread until now. But things only go wonky when I have Apple Music running at the same time.  Shrinking the VW window doesn't help.  Quit Music and VW runs fine.

    Regarding the slowdowns in 14.6

    I'm using a MBP M2 Max 32 running 14.6.1.

I have 2 4K external displays via a Thunderbolt dock.

Running VW with my MacBook Pro closed causes an instant crash. Every. Time.

if I run with my MacBook Pro open and the palettes on a different display than the main window, I experience severe (10 seconds or more) delays of unresponsiveness, including the cursor not updating.

If everything is on the main screen, however, performance is smoooooth.

    Hope this helps someone.

    Hello everyone,

We've identified two possible steps to help resolve the slow response issue on external monitors:

    1. Go to "System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Mission Control" and enable "Displays have separate Spaces" (this requires logging out to take effect).

    2. Try reducing the size of the Vectorworks window slightly.

These methods have been effective on some machines. Vectorworks is still actively working on a permanent solution to this issue.

    Thank you for your patience.
