Many users have begun to inquire on the benefits as far as Vectorworks is concerned, if they were up upgrade their old hard disk drive (HDD) to a solid state drive (SSD).
We in Technical Support cannot stress enough the benefits of an SSD upgrade for general computer use. Vectorworks operations themselves may not increase in speed, but all applications including Vectorworks will load faster, files will copy, move and save quicker and generally you will spend less time waiting for your computer to complete various operations than you would with a traditional HDD. We highly recommend this upgrade for any computer user.
Below you will find a list of the Vectorworks-specific benefits you may see as a result of upgrading to an SSD as determined by internal speed testing in Technical Support:
Test hardware details:
Model: Dell Optiplex 990
OS: Windows 7 64bit
CPU: Intel i7-2600
RAM: 8GB DDR3
Graphics: Radeon HD 6450
These benchmark tests were performed on the same physical machine, the only difference was the swapping of and HDD for an SSD. The OS was cloned from one drive to the other to ensure an identical software environment as well. These two sets of tests were performed with the operating system, Vectorworks, and the files used for testing all residing on the same drive. The specifications of both the HDD and the SSD used in these tests are listed at the bottom of this article.
Vectorworks will launch and close faster.
We have seen a minimum decrease in Vectorworks startup and shutdown times between 6% and 12%
Vectorworks files will open and save faster.
We have seen a minimum decrease in Vectorworks file open and save times between 8% and 12%
Rendering speeds may improve.
We have seen decreses in Renderworks rendering times between 5% and 16%. In some extreme cases, a 20% decrease in rendering time was seen, but this is above what is to be expected on average.
