JPEG
PROs
• Secure- The receiver can’t “take” your geometry from the image.
CONs
• A jpeg file has a fixed resolution and therefore looks different on every computer. Importing one into a CAD program produces different size results depending on the program settings.
• Many email servers "scrub" jpeg images looking for viruses, and the process can scramble some jpegs, or leave you with only the postage-stamp preview in many cases.
PDF
PROs
• In most cases, when you send someone a PDF, it will allows look the same regardless of application or operating system.
CONs
• Data is unsecure. The PDF can be imported into a CAD program and the vector data can easily be “harvested”
What is the best choice? Do both.
• In Vectorworks, export your document as a PDF.
• Convert the PDF to JPEG and lock in the resolution. Around 200 dots per inch is normally sufficient.
• Convert the newly created JPEG back to a PDF. Now you have all the security of a PDF, without the “harvestable” vector and text data.
