  • Connect GrandMA onPC/Console to Vision 2.3 PC w/ multi comps

    PVA - Admin

There are a few things you need to know in order to properly configure the GrandMA console (or OnPC) for it to work with ESP Vision.

This discussion is valid for the following configurations:

GrandMA console to Vision 2.3 PC
GrandMA OnPC to Vision 2.3 PC (2 machines)

This discussion does not discuss running Vision/OnPC on the same computer, or connecting to Vision 3 MAC. See other posts for those instructions.

During the last few years, MA-Net protocol has changed, requiring different drivers for different versions of the onPC software. It is important that you install the appropriate driver so that the MA onPC can communicate with Vision 2.3 PC. All appropriate drivers are delivered with Vision 2.3. They can be found in the Vision 2.2/tools directory.

If you are using GrandMA software version 5.6xx OR PRIOR,
    install gmaESPVision1100setup.exe

If you are using GrandMA software version 5.7xx through 5.9xx,
    install gmaESPVision2000setup.exe

If you are using GrandMA software version 6.0+,
    install gmaESPVision6200setup.exe

NOTE: gmaESPVision1100setup.exe and gmaESPVision2000setup.exe will NOT install onto Windows 7 machines. Only the latest driver is Win 7 compliant.

If you have accidentally installed the wrong driver, OR if you are upgrading the version of the MA software that you previously had installed, requiring a new driver, do the following:

Step 1. Go to the Control Panel, and using Add/Remove programs, find and uninstall the grandMA - ESP Vision Driver.

Step 2. RESTART YOUR COMPUTER. This is very important.

Step 3. Install the appropriate driver, as determined above.

    Continue to Configure Network below.

To begin, make sure that the IP addresses assigned to the 2 machines are on the same subnet. What this means, is that you must establish a valid TCP/IP connection between the 2 systems for Artnet to work. Here is a sample that will work:

    OnPC machine OR GrandMA Console:
    IP Address:
    Subnet Mask:

    ESP Vision machine:
    IP Address:
    Subnet Mask:

Disable all firewalls on Vision and OnPC machine.

Let's verify that we have valid network connectivity.

On the computer running Vision 2.3 PC, click on the Start button in the lower left, and select the Run option:

In the Run dialog, type cmd in the Open line and click the OK button:

A black DOS command window will open, allowing you to issue a Ping command. Type ping, followed by a space and the IP address of the OTHER machine (either OnPC computer or GrandMA console):

If a valid connection exists, the response will appear as follows:

If the connection is NOT available, the response will show that the request timed out, as shown here:

If you get this second response, the two machines are NOT communicating with each other. Check that the Ethernet cables are properly plugged into the computers and/or hub. Also, consider that you may have a bad cable. Once you are sure the physical connection is good, go back up to CONFIGURE THE NETWORK above, and verify your settings, then retest. Remember, firewalls will block this connection, and Vision and MA-Net cannot communicate without a valid network environment.

If you receive the "request timed out" message, check your firewall settings.
If you are using Windows XP, be sure that the Windows XP firewall is disabled. (See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283673 for instructions).
If you are Using Windows Vista or Windows 7, be sure that User Account Control (UAC) is turned off. (See http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows- ... ga-sw-vista/  for instructions.)

If you are working in a 2 computer environment, repeat the above test on the computer running OnPC, pinging the IP address of the Vision 2.3 PC computer. If the response is positive, you are ready to move forward. If not, go back to CONFIGURE THE NETWORK above

Please note that the instuctions for the GrandMA console and OnPC are interchangeable.

Step 1: On the GrandMA console, click on the tools button.

Step 2: Click on the MA Network Configuration.

Step 3: You should have already verified Network Connectivity above. To verify, the IP address listed should be on the same subnet as the ESP Vision computer. If you have previously verified the network as outlined above, no additional changes are necessary.

Step 4: Change the Session ID to any preferred number. In this instance the Session ID is 1.

Step 5: Click on Start session.

Step 6: On the Vision 2.3 PC computer, go to the control panel, and open up the GrandMA-ESP Vision driver.

Step 7: Change the station IP address to match the IP address on the GrandMA, if it does not already match. If you are using the latest version of software/drivers, you will see this screen... if you are using a legacy version, you may not have the MA-Net Mode option. This is for specifying between MA-Net legacy and MA-Net 2. Be sure that it is properly configured for MA-Net if using GrandMA 1 software.

Step 8: Change the Session ID to match the Session ID used on the GrandMA. Then click on ok.

Now, you should be able to patch your show (or load an existing show), and you should be good to go. Once you launch Vision 2.3 PC, be sure to select the appropriate MA driver as your DMX provider.

If you are using GrandMA Version 5.6xx or prior, your selection will read GrandMA
If you are using GrandMA Version 5.7 - 5.99, your selection will read GrandMA 5.7xx
If you are using GrandMA Version 6.0+, you selection will read GrandMA1

If you don't have the correct option to select, based upon your version of onPC software installed, go back up to SELECT PROPER DRIVER section above.
