Atomic Architecture in America: 1945 - 1965

For two decades, experimentation in architecture and design led to a stylistic lexicon where structures defied gravity, cars flew, and buildings resembled lunar landers. It was pure push-button Americana...an Eames chair in a vinyl slipcover.

At our Atomic Architecture lunch and learn, you'll learn about architects and designers such as James Langenheim, William Pereira, John Lautner, Albert Frey, Matti Suuronen, Craig Ellwood, Buckmaster Fuller, and many others as we explore the atomic age and it's influence on creativity.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain how social and technological shifts are reflected in the creative decisions designers make.
  • Differentiate between the works of several important architects who contributed to this unique chapter in American architectural history.
  • Recognize how scientific breakthroughs impact visionary thinking and sometimes lead to solutions that are impossible to fulfill.
  • Discuss how mid-century designers assimilated technology and social expectations into a distinctive brand that still influences architects today.
